Psychrolutes marcidus

Hey there! How's it going?
So the first creature here is said to be "the world's most miserable-looking fish" by environmentalgraffiti.com
Introducing,the blobfish.

The first time I saw a picture of the blobfish,I thought, "He kind of looks like Squidward Tentacles from the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants". Don't you guys agree?

The blobfish is a member of the Psychrolutes family, inhabiting the deep waters off the coasts of mainland Australia and Tasmania. How deep exactly? It lives at depths between 600-1,200m, where the pressure is several times higher than that at sea level, and where the role of the gas bladders, that is,maintain buoyancy, in most fishes are of no use.  So how does the blobfish get by this?

Another thing about the blobfish which I found really intriguing is the substance of its body. The flesh of the blobfish is mostly a gelatinous mass, which has a slightly lower density than water, allowing it to easily float above the sea floor without having to exhaust energy on swimming. Not having much muscle does not deprive it from getting the nutrients they need, for the blobfish simply swallows anything edible that floats by in front of it. It eats mostly urchins, crabs and mollusks.

With all that being said, it is unfortunate to inform you guys that the blobfish is feared to be facing extinction.
Marine expert, Professor Callum Roberts from the University of York, said that 'this miserable looking fish has plenty to be miserable about'.
As mentioned, the blobfish lives at depths around 800m, where other ocean organisms, such as crabs, lobsters and other edible creatures live. As a result, the blobfish, which is inedible,is being dragged up along with the other catchers by trawler fishermen. Furthermore, since they relatively lack muscles, they are most vulnerable to being caught up in nets. Even though there are groups set up to raise awareness in protecting the blobfish,
many people still do not find the need to protect them. Remember guys, the world would not be as interesting without the existence of the BLOBFISH.

Lastly, enjoy this video about the blobfish :

Look alike? Teehee!

  1. Great insight on the lesser known creatures on the ocean seabed! I never knew blobfishes existed. It does look like Squidward, though.
